Recently, Rah Studios has been receiving a lot of enquires about using drones. Friends and clients have been eager to know what the benefits are and what are some of the things to consider when using a drone. So I teamed up with my old buddy and Rah Studios' content creator, Krithika, to answer one of Rah Studios Frequently Asked Questions (RFAQ).
Krithika: It has been noted that you have been using a lot of drones in your videography lately. Could you please tell me what are the benefits of using a drone?
Alain: The benefit of using a drone is that you can see a lot of the surrounding areas that you would normally not be able to capture. For example, the landscape around the property. Needless to say using a drone is pretty cool!
Krithika: They certainly are! Are there any restrictions you face when using a drone in your projects?
Alain: There definitely are some restrictions that are laid out by CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority). A few things include;
Krithika: Wow I didn't know that, that's really interesting, its definitely not as simple as one would think. On a final note, I wanted to ask you of a recent experience you had with a client where using a drone made the real difference in your final product?
Alain: Yea I can think of two recent experiences; the first was a recent video shoot I did for Jon Williams from Realmark (https://youtu.be/TfxesxtSOYc). The property we were shooting had a unique pool, it was an indoor pool and the home was a three storey property. From the second and third level you could actually see the pool! So Jon's request was to fly the drone indoors and to be able to lift up from the pool and go up the levels to show how it looked - the drone really created the impact we were going for.
The second property I did was for Edward Lim for an apartment block in the city (https://youtu.be/sX770-8ks-s), this one was interesting because it was within 5 kilometres of a helicopter pad and the ruling was if there was a helicopter in the proximity I have to land the drone straight away. What really made this project cool was that the apartment was on Stirling St, located so close to the city and the stadium - I did a 180 video shoot to showcase this.
These two experiences really highlighted the benefit of using a drone!
